  history of vmware

VMware was founded in 1998 by Diane Greene, Mendel Rosenblum, Scott Devine, Edouard Bugnion, and Ellen Wang. The company started as a research project at the University of California, Berkeley, where the founders were working on virtualization technology for x86-based computers.

In 1999, VMware released its first product, VMware Workstation, which allowed users to run multiple operating systems on a single physical machine. This quickly gained popularity among developers and IT professionals as it allowed them to test and run multiple operating systems and applications on a single desktop.

In 2001, VMware released VMware GSX Server, which was the first commercial product to provide server virtualization. This product was aimed at enterprise customers and allowed them to run multiple virtual servers on a single physical host, which greatly increased the utilization of hardware resources.

In 2003, VMware was acquired by EMC Corporation and became a subsidiary of the company. In the following years, the company released several new products and updates to its existing products, such as vSphere, vCloud Director, and vRealize, which helped to expand its presence in the enterprise market and solidify its position as a leader in the virtualization and cloud computing industry.

In 2014, VMware was spun off from EMC as a standalone company and became a publicly traded company. Since then, the company has continued to innovate and develop new products and services, and also acquired several other companies to expand its capabilities in areas such as network virtualization and cloud-native apps, making it one of the leading companies in the technology industry.
